Is Amazon AWS right for me? Or is there another managed host out there? via /r/webhosting

Is Amazon AWS right for me? Or is there another managed host out there?

So, I've been using Bluehost for years and tonight, I've finally had it with them. Constantly trying to upsell and the continuous increase in prices…I put up with it for a while and renewed with them last year with much hesitation but I've had enough.

OK…rant over. I've been looking around for shared hosts but I'm so uncertain. I checked out AWS and it seems alright but without using it, I can't be sure. I don't have the time to manage a server full-time so I need something that is somewhat managed. I do like Bluehost's setup but I can't. I currently have 3 sites that I manage for family and friends (paying of course) and need a smooth transition.

Is AWS or EC2 or S3 or whatever they call it now right for me? Is that too much for my needs? I don't see myself expanding anytime soon but I want to get away from my current host. Any suggestions, comments are welcomed and appreciated.

ipage & WordPress domain pointing via /r/webhosting

ipage & WordPress domain pointing

I recently took over a website for a community and built a wordpress site. The domain and hosting is through ipage. I made a new directory in ipage, installed WordPress and built the page.

When i point the domain at yourpage.com/new-directory, i can't access wp admin but the homepage shows up on the web but not the additional 3 pages nor the links.

When I point the domain to the home directory, i can access wp but the page give me an 500 error or forbidden on the additional pages.

The WP site on the wp url is yourpage.com/new-directory and website is the same. Ive tried switching it around and nothing.

What am i doing wrong?

Subdomain, DNS and Nginx via /r/webhosting

Subdomain, DNS and Nginx

Good Day guys. I hope someone can help me. I'm in the process of getting my site up and running on a VPS running the latest Ubuntu Server. So I basically have the main website, which is a Django app running off Gunicorn. Which is working perfectly. Alongside that site, I need a WordPress blog installed, hosted on the same server, but with the url blog.mydomain.com – which is what I'm having trouble with. Of course everything is SSL encrypted too. I have a Godaddy domain, which I linked up to the Vultr name servers (ns1.vultr.com). Also, I'm not too familiar with DNS servers (A/MX/NS etc etc) if someone could lead me into the right direction. I usually get it right, but through trial and error, so I still don't know what's the correct way to set it up.

What would be the best way to approach this? Advice would be much appreciated! Cheers.

Looking to host multiple WP sites, plus some custom static pages. via /r/webhosting

Looking to host multiple WP sites, plus some custom static pages.

I'm currently using wordpress.com to host 8 different pages for myself and family. I'm also in the process of learning react and redux and would like to be able to host static pages. Next to no traffic at the moment, just a portfolio, bright ideas, and harebrained schemes. What are some of the hosts (beyond the sidebar) that I should consider?

.zone vs. .host TLD via /r/webhosting

.zone vs. .host TLD

HI together, i just wanted to ask if anyone knows if there are any problems with .zone domains like there is with .host domains? We had some .host domains for customers but it seemed that some routers thought .host is a internal domain and so visitors couldn't access the website anymore.

Cant update or upgrade yum, mirrors problem? via /r/webhosting

Cant update or upgrade yum, mirrors problem?

When I run either yum upgrade or yum update I get this output:

Im still pretty new to webhosting and learning all this as I go along but have been reading lots of articles about similar problems. I believe these conf details might be needed?

# This is the default, if you make this bigger yum won't see if the metadata # is newer on the remote and so you'll "gain" the bandwidth of not having to # download the new metadata and "pay" for it by yum not having correct # information. # It is esp. important, to have correct metadata, for distributions like # Fedora which don't keep old packages around. If you don't like this checking # interupting your command line usage, it's much better to have something # manually check the metadata once an hour (yum-updatesd will do this). # metadata_expire=90m # PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo # in /etc/yum.repos.d skip_broken=1

thanks

Recommendations for an 24/7 internet radio website? via /r/webhosting

Recommendations for an 24/7 internet radio website?

Warning: I am new to web servers and server management in general. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

My goal is to create a site that streams audio using Icecast. I managed to get my site working with an AWS EC2 instance, but I learned that my bandwidth costs alone would be roughly $1.80 * average listeners (link to the post where I learned that lesson). I was recommended to use Hetzner by a friendly developer who has already created a 24/7 internet radio station using Icecast and Hetzner as his host (I did not ask him the exact specifics of his plan with his hosting provider, just that he used them). I am not asking for in depth instructions how (although if you have any instructions, much appreciated), I just want to make sure if the following is possible:

I plan to use the managed server VSERVER MC40 (the lowest tier available). On which, I plan to install Icecast and upload the site (however, I am not sure if I need a dedicated host to install an application like Icecast). Then I plan to dedicate a PC/Laptop to act as the master server (using Nginx or Xampp) with Icecast also installed to relay the stream to my Hetzner server. As far as I understand, I would be allowed 10 TB of data out (I might be getting this value wrong). 10TB should be okay for streaming at 64kbps with an average of 100 listeners or less, and I will have to look more in depth if they have any overage fees.

Please let me know if any of this information is incorrect. If you have any suggestions for anything, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

WordPress Brute Force attacks are getting ridiculous… via /r/webhosting

WordPress Brute Force attacks are getting ridiculous…

I was reviewing my server blocks for wp-admin and I didn't realize how many are happening. I knew they were bad but not this bad.

The link below is a PDF showing the last two hours from my server. 300 attacks in a little over 2 hours. All attacks were blocked by the server but still…ridiculous.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3NE1x0vcWH9Q2JwYjYtRGNCMDg/view?usp=sharing

I have a total of 363 pages showing 100 blocks per page. So you figure 36,300 blocks just from brute force on wp-admin since 2017-06-29. 36k blocks in 7 days….SEVEN DAYS!!!!

All different site and and mostly different IPs. All of these are connections are no referrer blocks which are mostly bots.

Reference no referrer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_referer
