which versions of php+mysql ? [eCommerce] via /r/webhosting

which versions of php+mysql ? [eCommerce]

Hi, I'm starting a new site for ecommerce with wordpress. It will start with low traffic .

I'm considering gandi webhosting (mainly because I have a discount coupon and preferred payment option) but it has different combinations such as

php5.6+mysql5.6

php7+mysql9

as well as other options.

Which of these 2 is better to go with as a newcomer?

I'm guessing the newer, 7 and 9? But I want to be sure so I don't run into difficult compatibility problems with the newer or an outdated version which will require too time time to upgrade later. I was comparing with siteground but 10gb vs 20gb with a difference of $3per month while not accepting paypal made them take the back burner for now, still reconsidering.

[Need Advice] Where to host Email with personal domain via /r/webhosting

[Need Advice] Where to host Email with personal domain

I've been looking at setting up a personal domain for email for the family.
My basis is Outlook Premium: They own the domain, $30 year, 5 email addresses, some other functionality, like aliases.

I looked at Google, at $5 a month per email it can't compete with Microsoft.

I'd like to own the domain and have 10 emails, but my family needs a more polished interface they are use to.
Is there are better option?

I'm sure this gets asked a lot, but after a couple days of reading I figured I just ask.

Looking for Feedback on InMotion WordPress Hosting via /r/webhosting

Looking for Feedback on InMotion WordPress Hosting

I'm looking into WordPress hosting providers currently. I'm thinking about using InMotion since they meet most of my requirements but I wanted to see how everyone felt about InMotion first. Also, if you have other hosting suggestions, here are my current requirements:

  • Host one WordPress site with 10GB or less of content
  • Bandwidth isn't a concern YET since it's a new site for a small business
  • Accepts monthly payments (SiteGround only does yearly)
  • No more than $10 per month.
  • Good WordPress security
  • Good speed

[Help Request] Deciding on a hosting service, simply want to run custom PHP on a template site via /r/webhosting

[Help Request] Deciding on a hosting service, simply want to run custom PHP on a template site

Hello! I have some [hopefully] rather simple questions.

I have purchased a domain from Namecheap and am currently looking into hosting options. I expect my site to receive approximately 50 visitors per day, and will grow to no more than 500 per day over the first year. The resource load should be quite minimal; everything will be static aside from a few PHP scripts (pricing calculator, for example) that I have created myself. Additionally, I am considering a system in which clients can create their own accounts and perhaps register an e-mail address with me so I can send out promotional offers and things of that nature; for this, I have experience with MySQL, but am willing to side with any back-end solution that is recommendable. My initial idea was to just transfer the column with e-mail addresses into a CSV file, then copy and paste that into an Outlook mailing list. But anyway…

I know not to put all your eggs in one basket, but that is where I started. I saw the promotional offer from Namecheap for EasyWP beta hosting. However, after talking with their support, it appears that I would be limited to 1GB of disk space with no way (support used the word "impossible") to get any additional space, which worries me. Additionally, while the promo price ($10/yr) is solid, after the first year the cost effectiveness…is rather poor in the current market.

So, my questions.

  1. I want to generate/use a basic website template, I was thinking WordPress(?) would be best for this. I've scoured google for an answer, but haven't found anything direct:

1a. Can I view ALL the code that WP generates? Can I edit it without restrictions? It's my understanding that client-side languages are good to go out of the box, but languages such as PHP require a plugin, but that isn't hard to do?

1b. Does WP hook into or somehow assist me with systems such as a MySQL database for client information? Would I be forced to host this DB on the same server that hosts my website (Namecheap has me concerned for disk space…)

Please recommend me a hosting service for my needs. I am unfamiliar with Linux or server setup, so would like something managed and as pre-configured as possible. If the company had a reliable livechat support option, that would be wonderful.

In summary, I am trying to:

Use GUI to create website template –> view generated code and make edits as needed (copy and paste my PHP scripts into the site) –> hook in client account registration system with SQL backend

Preferably, the editing would be done with something like Notepad++ and Filezilla.

I appreciate all the assistance in advance! Thank you 🙂

[Recommendation request] Shared LAMP hosting for dev projects, backups, and WP staging via /r/webhosting

[Recommendation request] Shared LAMP hosting for dev projects, backups, and WP staging

I've done a few WordPress websites for friends and groups, and I want to run separate instances of those website somewhere more stable than my often re-imaged and often crashing laptop running Linux. I want to back up the data from existing WordPress websites onto private copies of those websites running out of my shared hosting account. (The live versions of these websites are already running on servers owned by other people, though I helped set up those serves and still have access.)

Even though the the websites I helped set up are WordPress, I do not want a managed WP solution. I want to try other content management systems, and I may want to use the account to host a couple live websites, at least one of which would be a basic front-end non-CMS website.

I also want to use the account as a playgroud for dev experiments, such as trying out new PHP-based content management systems, and maybe seeing what I can do with cron tasks and other processes.

Desired features

  • PHP 5.6
  • cURL
  • ImageMagick (or some equivalent for image processing — going off the requirements for Perch CMS, which is one that I play with sometimes)
  • intl, fileinfo, mbstring
  • cron
  • ability to access websites by free automatic subdomains or by IP address — no need to associate a domain for every project
  • unlimited websites or projects (not necessarily unlimited bandwidth or server resources)

Advanced wishlist

  • independent host — not EIG, also not GoDaddy
  • SSH support (ability to use SSH to navigate account folders or deploy)
  • some GUI backup and restore interface
  • enough bandwidth and server disc space to run four small WordPress websites
  • nginx (I'm curious and kind of want to try it.)
  • PHP 7 (curious)

I'm not a professional, and I'm not asking for a professional's solution. I don't have a professional's budget. I'm looking for standard PHP hosting that I can use for my hobby projects and to practice as I try to learn more sophisticated dev stuff. I'm not looking for a consumer solution that holds customers' hands and guides them every step of the way. I'm also not looking for virtual servers, because I can't afford to configure a separate droplet for every project that I want to work on.

Eagerly looking forward to recommendations!

Ughh, I don’t understand the process from go to whoah! via /r/webhosting

Ughh, I don’t understand the process from go to whoah!

I've been out of the web dev, web design game for awhile (10+ years) and not sure on how to get things online! I'm thinking about getting a service provider to get me on the line completely, but obviously there will be premium costs involved in this – so i thought I should give it a stab.

My wife and I have a couple of small businesses that we run from home that we would like to get online. We purely want to use it as front to show some images of our products, and instruct people to call or email us and then from there we would discuss things further with the customer there.

We already have our .com.au that we purchased from godaddy ($17AUD p/year) which will expire soon. We obviously don't have any content online, but we do use the email functionality via g-suite to send/receive emails from our .com.au for $10AUD annually.

For hosting, I had a free account with onesite but that has since been sold and now its $80AUD a year.

Am I doing this right? Are there are providers I should be using? Are there more cost efficient methods for what we have currently? Sorry if I'm missing any key info here. Let me know if there's any info I missed.

Thanks!

new domain gets redirected to old one, no idea why via /r/webhosting

new domain gets redirected to old one, no idea why

Hey Guys, I have bought my old domain at namecheap and I have hosted it at stablehost. Now I have bought a new one and I have changed the domain name with stablehost and I have setup the nameservers on namecheap. To not lose SEO points I redirected the old domain to the new one with namecheap. However when I type in my new domain it gets redirected to the old one. I have no idea why, any recommendations how to solve this?
